Building Back Better, Stronger, Together

On November 8 2013, Typhoon Yolanda caused destruction across Visayas. More than 6,000 people perished, 14 million people were affected while devastating more than 1 million houses, of which 50% were completely destroyed. Nearly 6 million children have been affected. Education was disrupted with 5,898 classrooms completely destroyed and 14,508 partially destroyed.

Over one year since Typhoon Yolanda, the majority of displaced and affected people have returned home, but efforts to seek longer-term solutions for people remaining in temporary shelters, as well as seeking alternative solutions to restore livelihood options are still needed in the area.

In a further effort  to support this recovery process, Plan entered a two-year contract with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to provide services under the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) 9175-PHI: Emergency Assistance and Early Recovery for Poor Municipalities Affected by Typhoon Yolanda. Following a series of consultations, analysis of gaps – particularly related to livelihoods, DRR and education sectors - and guided by Plan’s overall recovery strategy for Yolanda, the project is present in the provinces of Samar, Eastern Samar and Leyte and implements activities in 32 barangays in 12 municipalities.

Plan, with funding partners--the Asian Development Bank and Japan Fund for Poverty, and implementing partners, Department of Social Welfare and Development, are BUILDING BACK BETTER, STRONGER, TOGETHER.
